About Millpost Records

Sussex's Finest Folk Record Label

At Millpost Records, we pride ourselves on our celebration of heritage and our reputation as one of the finest and celebrated yet often innovative record labels in Sussex. Today, our story serves as a reminder of the integrity, excellence and attention to quality that has defined the Millpost Records name and its releases over the years; standards which we strive to maintain in our music today.

"Folk for the Future"

Founded in 2020, the first Millpost Records release came from the town of Blaydon-on-Tyne, Gateshead, when our founder Jack Hogsden decided to self-release his first project after having been performing for almost a decade on the folk circuit. As a record label which incorporated recording, mixing, and mastering, as well as Jack's knowledge in live sound engineering, the label quickly gained a reputation when he arrived back in his home county of Sussex. Millpost Records still continues to be located in this wonderful county, in view of the Millpost that gave us our name; the remaining central post of the Ringmer Windmill. In 1925, the Ringmer Windmill was hit by lightning and began to fall, yet over a century later, despite remnants being removed by looters, the central "Mill Post" still stands tall upon the South Downs, overlooking the villages of Ringmer and Glynde.

"I'll do it myself"

When Jack wanted to create his first release, the process, cost, and time was simply not good enough. You could only be signed if you had releases, and releases were only credible if you were signed. So, armed with his knowledge from live sound engineering, experimenting with microphones and recording techniques, and with sheer determination, he simply said, "I'll do it myself", and his first release was recorded, mixed, mastered, designed, published, registered, and pressed. Not only was the process a lot more cost effective, but the over process was significantly shorter, and financially the process was much easier. It was after this, however, that he began to look at helping other emerging artists release their music. Some projects simply did not work, and after many revisions, changes, simulations, and predictions, the label model worked. He had found the perfect balance for combining the best features of a record label, for a price that made it accessible to all.

"It's about legitimacy"

Moving into 2026, Millpost Records wasn't only seeing one record by Jack being produced, but another potentially four releases, with singles, being released, showcasing the best in emerging talent throughout Sussex. Millpost Records has become part of a larger group, known as "The Millpost Coalition", which represents the four sides of our logo; record label for artists, studio services for all musicians, promotion for the roster, and antiquities for the curious. The separation of everything that Millpost Records stands for, and splitting into The Millpost Coalition, has rooted the credibility of the company for the future. Providing resources for all, as well as working with varying local organisations, charities, archives, and businesses, The Millpost Coalition is reigniting the folk flame for the county, and beyond, with legitimacy, accessibility, and inclusivity at the forefront.

Millpost Today & Tomorrow

Millpost Records, and its affiliates within The Millpost Coalition, is owned by Jack Hogsden, and remains to be the leading organisation for the preservation and growth of folk music, dance, customs, and tradition within Sussex. With five artists on the roster, with more on the way, this is a testimony to the hard work, care, and dedication we have for these traditions. As Owner and Director, Jack Hogsden is looking at continuing to grow the folk circuit of Sussex, with the help of various organisations and groups, ensuring that folk music can continue to thrive.
